SIMPLE WAYS

  • Take advantage of student discounts you can receive at many shops, cinemas and restaurants.  Public transport may also offer student discounts.
  • Prepare a budget.  See our page on budgeting for more information.
  • Find the lowest possible price of products you want to buy.  Class textbooks can be very expensive so it may be worth purchasing either new or second-hand copies on Amazon (try searching in the widget now).  I purchased most textbooks online from Amazon because they were noticeably cheaper than my university bookshop.  Also, eBay is an attractive option for this for many products.  Remember to check for 100% (or close to) feedback before buying.
  • Pick the best bank available for a student account.  For more information see the page on borrowing.
  • Withdraw money at free ATMs.  There’s nothing worse than being charged £2 to withdraw your own cash.
  • Sort out a cost effective mobile phone plan and don’t overuse your mobile.  If you are spending a large amount every month on your mobile it may be worth reviewing your plan or finding a new one.
